![]() I was already sputtering out by Stardust Speedway, which is the seventh zone out of twelve (or thirteen if you manage to collect all the chaos emeralds with Sonic.) That does leave you with at least a solid, good first half, but should you keep pushing on after that, things will really begin to drag, thanks to zones littered with annoying gimmicks that slow things down to a halt. Studiopolis finally brings some much-needed wholly original content to the game, but after a while, the novelty of a new "classic" Sonic game starts to wear off. The rearranged second acts of each zone are fairly competently designed, and all the new bosses are fun to spar off against. The game starts off decently strong, provided you can look past the hundredth rehash of Green Hill Zone. ![]() Mania feels like little more than a glorified romhack. After revisiting the classic Genesis Sonic games and enjoying most of them, certainly Mania would be worth a replay as well, right? So I played it again, expecting to like it for sure this time, but. I hated all the little gimmicks and fan servicey moments and the almost complete reliance on old zones. 8.5/10Ĥh 22m ProgressI first played Sonic Mania about a year ago, when I was not a Sonic fan by any stretch of the imagination and thought that perhaps Mania would rekindle my Sonic-loving fire. NOW we just need more christian whitehead sonic works to come out and I can see the Sonic as a series recovering from the current landscape of meh games in the series. While I am still not the BIGGEST fan of sonic, I can appreciate just how beautiful this game is for the fans. Conclusion Sonic Mania is Sonic at its best. ![]() I would had liked more of specific bosses that I enjoyed, but at the same time their lack of usage is what makes them special. I had a TON of fun on each boss and didn't feel tired for any of them, as they all felt unique to each other for each encounter. The levels I didn't like the most were the ones were the ones that had me squished/crushed to death the most, or ones that had really annoying enemy types, or precise platforming, something sonic isn't the best at imo. Chemical plant and Metallic Madness were really good, but a few levels and especially the last level were just not good imo. Level Design/ Boss Design Now this is something that while I loved, there were a few stages that I despised personally. Some songs weren't as good as the peak songs, but overall I was VERY happy with the songs in this game. Studiopolis, and soooo much more levels had songs that were a damn treat to listen to. ![]() Each act having their own song, variations for each level was just perfect. I will say that the dimension and the scenes were actually really peak for sonic, was serviceable. Having 2 moving blocks come together and insta kill you was terrible, but it is just something that the classic sonic formula brings with it. However the BIGGEST flaw I hated about the game was simply being squished. There wasn't as much bullshit moments like in Sonic 1 like having the end of a speed ramp be a spike or something. The Momentum and speed of this game was just perfect. During those beginning stages of the game my eyes were just BLOWN away by how much they are able to fit in for each level. Gameplay It's the Classic Sonic Formula, but now with a TON of more new gameplay assets and mechanics that keep the game fresh as you play through the game. While I am not a personal big fan of sonic myself, I can see the love and care put onto this game. I hope more software houses would follow the example of giving their IPs and characters to skilled fans (I would love a Mario Mania)ħh Played8.5/10 Sonic Mania is the Classic Sonic Formula at its best. Great experience, definitely suggested to Sonic fansn't (such as myself). Not every level is as good as the others, and most bosses were either easily cheesed (by post-hit invulnerability) or too hard to figure out (and you only get 3 chances before having to do the whole act, or zone, again). Overall also the levels are very well made, the scores are great, the settings are very fresh and the pacing is on point. ![]() The fact that you fly through the level without seeing it all at once makes it so that if you replay that level (either because you died or just because you went back to the game) you see an entirely different part of it and that makes it new every time. But I had a really good time with this one and it made me rethink entirely what I knew about the blue hedgehog. 5h 5m PlayedI've never been a Sonic guy, I don't like to fly through levels, I love to take my time and appreciate the level design and the details. ![]()
